1915 Men of Europe
JOUVE, P.J. {ROGER FRY, translator] [Roald KRISTIAN, illustrator]
Description du livre: Omega Workshops, 1915. Soft cover. État : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. MEN OF EUROPE. 1915, by P. J. [Pierre-Jean] Jouve., translated by R. F. [Roger Fry], Omega Workshops, November 1915, London at 33 Fitzroy Square, large quarto wrappers, tan lettered in maroon, no indication of number printed, price of 2 s. on cover, printed by Richard Madley under direction of Omega as stated on inside of rear wrapper, illustrated by ROALD KRISTIAN with two head/tail pieces in maroon and 4 initials, all as shown in Greenwood’s OMEGA CUTS, [16 pp] un-numbered, text is an anti-war poem which Fry translated; apparently his friend Vildrac introduced Jouve’s poem to Fry; text pages are near fine and wrappers, which overlap text pages, are complete and near VG with dustiness at edges and some very light, small spatters (almost a cast-off from a brush) on top wrapper, spatters resemble foxing but they are not, really for such a fragile Omega item this is in excellent condition and the woodcuts by Kristian are exquisite, arguably the first Omega book (as noted in the Crafts Council exhibition catalog) predating Simpson’s Choice by one month, this is the scarcest of the Omega imprints and exponentially harder to find than Simpson’s Choice, Lucretius et al; a Bloomsbury rarity melding Fry’s nascent French translation work (pre-dating his efforts with Mallarme) with the Omega/Kristian book production.
